The MODS & ROCKERS 2001
Fave Actors Guide
The films in the festival spotlight an astonishing array of British and
American actors. And one or two thespians from other lands too! So check
out the movies featuring your favorites!
Several of the actors are associated with more than one film in the
festival. And sometimes an actor is involved with a movie in a capacity
other than acting - such as writing, producing or music scoring. With
this A-Z list - you can check out all the films relating to all the
principal actors.
There are capsule descriptions to help identify certain performers -
such as character actors or British talent - who might be more familiar
to you by a description of their other work than by their name.

series of low-brow sex comedy movies - the gloriously tacky "Confessions
Of A..." (Window Cleaner, Driving Instructor, Pop Performer etc etc)
Otley
- Jean-Paul Belmondo
- One of the ultimate Gallic symbols. As adept playing French gangsters
as comedic roles. Apparently irresistible to women!
Casino Royale
- Jacqueline Bisset
- Utterly gorgeous and talented British actress once described by Newsweek
magazine as "the most beautiful film actress of all time"
Casino Royale
- Cilla Black
- The cloakroom gal at Liverpool's Cavern Club was a pal of the Beatles
and under the skillful handling of Beatles manager Brian Epstein became
a hugely successful pop singer. Epstein presciently believed that she
would become a big TV star - and she has been UK's top female TV
personality for 30 years. After cameo in Gerry & the Pacemakers' 1965
movie "Ferry Cross the Mersey" - she landed this role in movie directed
by stage legend Sir Peter Hall. As Cilla would say in her distinctive
Scouse accent: "Hope you have a lorra fun!"
Work Is A 4-Letter Word
- John Bluthal
- Familiar face in British comedies - including Beatles movies (he was the
car thief in "A Hard Day's Night" and a baddie in "Help!") and part of
Spike Milligan's 70's troupe in ground-breaking TV series - "Q5" and its
successors.
Casino Royale
- James Bolam
- Part of the new wave of 60's actors. Northern working-class. Was one
half of the "Likely Lads" a classic 60's-70's Brit-com created and
written by Dick Clement and Ian LaFrenais. Bolam played the cheeky,
irascible John Lennon-like character "Terry". Continued success as star
on British TV and as character actor in movies such as "The End Of the
Affair."
Otley

- Suave, debonair Frenchman turned American icon. Unforgettable in
numerous films including "Gaslight" and "Barefoot In The Park"
Casino Royale
- Bernard Bresslaw
- Unique comedic character actor who specialized in playing gruff, dense
imbeciles. A lofty 6'7" he was a staple in "Carry On..." movies. After
one of the UK's easy listening crooners had a late 50's hit with a
schmaltzy ballad called "You Need Hands" - Bresslaw recorded a parody
"You Need Feet" - which was later memorably featured in the Rutles movie
"All You Need Is Cash" ("...and I need feet - to run away from you")
Morgan!
- Andrea Cagan
- She followed her debut in "Captain Milkshake" with the role of Bunny in
1972's "The Hot Box" - and then what? We have no idea. Anyone know?
Please share with us!

the Pink Panther films. And many sophisticated European films over the
years.
What's New Pussycat?

Casino Royale
- Tom Courtenay
- Came to prominence at the same time as Albert Finney - playing Northern
working class characters in films such as "The Loneliness Of The Long
Distance Runner" and "Billy Liar." Oscar-nominated for "Doctor
Zhivago" and "The Dresser." Fabulous actor - who has given much of his
career to the English stage.
Otley
- Wendy Craig

daffy sensibilities.
I'll Never Forget What's 'Is Name
- Kenneth Cranham
- Solid English character actor - at home in drama and comedy.
Otley
- Bernard Cribbins
- Popular comedic character - familiar in Ealing comedies and "Carry
On..." films. In 1962 - just before he broke through producing the
Beatles - George Martin recorded a series of novelty hit singles
featuring Cribbins. One of the titles later inspired the name of a
really bad pop group. (Clue: It wasn't "Hole In The Ground" or "Gossip
Calypso." Maybe it was "Right Said Fred" ?!)
Casino Royale

Cleese, Michael Palin, Terry Gilliam and Graham Chapman.

British Buddy Holly - complete with hiccoughing vocals. He matured into
respected TV and film actor in 70's and 80's (including "Stardust" and
"McVicar") He also discovered and produced rock singer Leo Sayer.
Beat Girl
- Marianne Faithfull
- The ultimate 1960's poor little rich girl. The prototype bread-head
waif. She managed to get out from under Mick Jagger's thumb (among
other things) to establish herself as a credible actress. Her stage
Ophelia in 1969 was a stunner. But Mick's jagged edge left its marks on
her. Her resurrection as rock music's Edith Piaf owes much to how she
survived her late 60's and early 70's descent into Sympathy For The
Devil.
I'll Never Forget What's 'Is Name
Girl On A Motorcycle

Zabriskie Point

- Ronald Fraser
- Actor who specialized in playing quirky upper-class types - his
distinctive Englishman-as-harassed-hamster looks made him a memorable
face.
Sebastian
- Mark Frechette

he was arrested in 1970 in Boston for alleged armed robbery. He was
sentenced to 15 years in prison. Died in a weight room at Massachusetts
Correctional Institution when a 150-pound weight bar pressed against his
throat. Ruled an accident...
Zabriskie Point
- Alan Freeman
- Australian-born DJ who became icon of swinging London as camp BBC radio

Zabriskie Point
Revolution
- Mie Hama
- If you wondered whether appearing in the Japanese film which Woody Allen
turned into "What's Up Tiger Lily?" was a career benefit for any of the
original cast - just check out "You Only Live Twice." Having been
credited as just "Mystery Moll #2" in the 1964 Japanese original film -
in Woody Allen's 1966 version she was renamed Teri Yaki. Within months
she was cast as a lead character in the next Bond movie - as Kissy
Suzuki. She and fellow "Tiger Lily" actress Akiko Wakabayashi had made
the journey all the way from minor roles in 1962's "King Kong Versus
Godzilla" through Tiger Lily - into the world of James Bond.
What's Up, Tiger Lily?
- Irene Handl
- The grand old lady of English comedies. Everybody's favorite dotty
character. Usually working class, cockney, salt-of-the-earth types.
Appeared in 118 credited roles over a 50 year span.

a part in Otto Preminger's sixties swansong "Skidoo" and a slot on "The
Love Boat".

height of sophistication!) - Pete's navy blazer and white slacks
epitomized the Brit version of a hipster swinger!
Otley
- Derek Nimmo
- Britain's favorite comedic clergyman - this actor appeared in several
sitcoms as a twittery priest. He was like a Brit-com equivalent of
Father Guido Sarducci! He was unbilled in "A Hard Day's Night" as the
magician with the diminishing number of birds!
Casino Royale
- David Niven
- Casino Royale
- Milo O'Shea
- The twinkling-eyed Irish character actor who enhances every film he
appears in - and we've seen him as the judge in "The Verdict" and the
priest in "The Purple Rose of Cairo" among many. His character in
"Barbarella" inspired five nondescript lads from Birmingham to name
themselves Duran Duran - but that should not be held against him!
