The MODS & ROCKERS 2001
Fave Musicians Guide
The films in the festival spotlight an astonishing array of British and
American music-makers. In most cases the musicians are involved playing
on the soundtrack or as a composer. Some of them are also seen
performing - in living Technicolor! So - check out the movies featuring
your favorites!
Some of the musicians are associated with more than one film in the
festival - and you can check out each film.
There are capsule descriptions to provide background on some of the
musicians - particularly those who have had a lower profile in recent
years - or who never achieved the highest pinnacles of fame.

What's New Pussycat?
- John Barry
- The brilliant composer/arranger associated with the James Bond movies.
(Little-known trivia: Barry did not actually write the distinctive Bond
theme - he was that tune's arranger. Composer was a chap called Monty
Norman.) Barry DID compose or co-write most of the subsequent Bond
scores and theme songs.
Beat Girl
- Don Black
- Talented lyricist. His work includes "To Sir With Love" and he co-wrote
the show "Aspects of Love" with Andrew Lloyd-Webber.
Work Is A 4-Letter Word
- Cilla Black
- The cloakroom gal at Liverpool's Cavern Club was a pal of the Beatles
and under the skillful handling of Beatles manager Brian Epstein became
a hugely successful pop singer. Paul McCartney wrote songs for her
"Love Of The Loved," "It's For You" and "Step Inside Love" and she
recorded the original theme song for the movie "Alfie" amid her
recordings of many other Bacharach-David songs. George Martin produced
and Burt Bacharach arranged and conducted the recording.
Work Is A 4-Letter Word
- Country Joe & The Fish
- Captain Milkshake
Revolution
- Bob Crewe
- A major writer-producer in the 60's and 70's. Greatly responsible for
success of the Four Seasons ("Sherry" and "Rag Doll") and Frankie Valli
hits such as "My Eyes Adored You." In the 70's wrote and produced hits
for Disco Tex & The Sex-o-lettes among many.
Barbarella
- Johnny Dankworth
- One of the pioneers of British modern jazz with pals Ronnie Scott and
Benny Green. Wrote and recorded numerous jazz suites combining jazz
with classical and pop themes. Created scores for noted films such as
"Saturday Night And Sunday Morning" and "The Servant." Married to jazz
singer Cleo Laine.
Modesty Blaise
Morgan!
- Hal David
- The genius wordsmith behind Burt Bacharach.
Casino Royale
What's New Pussycat?
- David and Jonathan
- A two-hit wonder - the David & Jonathan name was actually a performing
outlet for two of the UK's most prolific songwriters - Roger Cook and
Roger Greenaway. They penned "Long Cool Woman (In a Black Dress)" for
The Hollies, "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing" (for The New Seekers
and Coca-Cola - not necessarily in that order!) and hits for Gene
Pitney, Engelbert Humperdinck, Blue Mink and many others. David &
Jonathan released the first single version of the Beatles' "Michelle"
and had a huge UK hit with it in early 1966.
Modesty Blaise
- Duran Duran (!!)
- The heroes of Britain's new romantic movement are NOT featured in this
movie - or in this festival. But they are listed because they took
their name from the Milo O'Shea character in "Barbarella."
Barbarella
- John Fahey
- Utterly brilliant American acoustic guitarist - blending folk, blues,
jazz and country sources into his own unique style.
Zabriskie Point
- Adam Faith
- Pre-Beatle era English teen idol - with clean-cut looks. Vocally - a
British Buddy Holly - complete with hiccoughing vocals. In terms of
success, second only to Cliff Richard in the early 60's. His mid-60's
beat-group persona featured a backing group The Roulettes which featured
future Argent members Russ Ballard and Bob Henrit. In the early 70's
Faith (who was born Terry Nelhams) discovered and produced rock singer
Leo Sayer. He became a successful actor - teaming up with David Essex
in the 1974 retro pop story "Stardust."
Beat Girl
- Marianne Faithfull
- This little bird was a discovery of original Stones manager/producer
Andrew Loog Oldham. She became his songbird after she had become Mick
Jagger's regular 'bird' - 60's parlance for a girlfriend. Her initial
tunes were waif-like ballads such as "This Little Bird" and
Jagger-Richards' "As Tears Go By." In the 80's she reinvented herself
as an Edith Piaf for the post-rock era. But whatever her musical style
- she has always looked great in black leather!
Girl On A Motorcycle
I'll Never Forget What's 'Is Name
- Jerry Garcia
- The Grateful Dead guitarist was a huge movie buff - and he recorded
several solo guitar improvisations for this movie. All the surviving
versions can be heard on the excellent Rhino Records soundtrack album
for this movie.
Zabriskie Point
- David Gilmour
- Zabriskie Point
- The Glitterhouse
- The group used by music producer Bob Crewe to record the songs he wrote
for the Barbarella soundtrack. They were under contract to Crewe at the
time - and recorded all the songs in New York.
Barbarella
- Jerry Goldsmith
- Very successful and prolific movie composer. He graduated from TV -
where he had written themes for Dr. Kildare, The Twilight Zone, Gunsmoke
and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. His top movie scores include The Omen,
Chinatown, Star Trek, Papillon, Gremlins, Rambo.
Sebastian
- Grateful Dead
- Zabriskie Point
- Benny Green
- Highly-respected British jazz composer, musician and journalist.
Frequent collaborator with Johnny Dankworth.
Modesty Blaise
- Anita Harris
- English balladeer who had chart success with schmaltzy songs - quite
incongruously in the middle of the halcyon hippie-dippy days of 1967.
Managed at the time by one "Harvey Fried" - who later changed his name
and became Brian Lane - manager of progressive art-rock band Yes.
(Usually its the artists who change their name and image. Fried-Lane
pioneered the manager makeover.)
Sebastian
- Paul Jones
- Original lead singer of Manfred Mann. He sang on the Manfred Mann
recording of Bacharach-David's "My Little Red Book" for the "What's New
Pussycat?" soundtrack - which was an inspiration for Love's 1967 cover
of the song.
What's New Pussycat?
- Tom Jones
- What's New Pussycat?
- Kaleidoscope
- Captain Milkshake
- Francis Lai
- Prolific composer of movie scores for films such as "A Man And A Woman"
"Three Into Two Won't Go" and most notably "Love Story" - for which he
won the Academy Award.
I'll Never Forget What's 'Is Name
- Lovin' Spoonful
- John Sebastian's group were highly-prized by filmmakers in the
mid-60's. Woody Allen chose them for this 1966 spy spoof. And a young
director named Francis Ford Coppola commissioned Sebastian to write the
songs for his first film - "You're A Big Boy Now" - which resulted in a
great soundtrack album with the Spoonful playing those songs.
What's Up, Tiger Lily?
- Manfred Mann
- The 1966 incarnation was the best-known lineup of this group formed by
South African keyboard player Manfred Mann (who selflessly gave his name
to the band!) A year later, singer Paul Jones split for a solo career
and film stardom - to be replaced by Mike D'Abo (who later co-wrote
"Handbags And The Gladrags" for Rod Stewart) That next version of
Manfred Mann had hits with "Mighty Quinn" and "Ha Ha Said the Clown" -
but nothing rivaled the earlier lineup. Interestingly - most of the
members of the various lineups from the 60's now tour UK and Europe in a
revival band - including both Jones and D'Abo. The key missing player
is the dour Manfred Mann himself!
What's New Pussycat?
- The Steve Miller Band
- Captain Milkshake
- Revolution
- Mother Earth
- Revolution
- Stanley Myers
- Film and classical composer - who later wrote "Cavatina" - otherwise
known as "Theme From The Deerhunter"
Otley
- Patti Page
- Celebrated country star.
Zabriskie Point
- Don Partridge
- Don Partridge was briefly a phenomenon in late 60's Britain. He was a
busker - the English term for a street singer. He was also a one-man
band. On his first TV appearances promoting his first single "Rosie" -
viewers were startled to see a man playing acoustic guitar while
simultaneously playing a drum on his back (he used beaters attached to
his elbows!) Partridge followed up his top five debut with an even
stronger tune - "Blue Eyes" which was another top five hit. At this
point he announced his intention of creating a package tour of himself
and other itinerant buskers and street singers. A sort of Lillith Fair
of street singers.... a Busker-palooza.... It worked perfectly...
Within months the idea - and his career had collapsed! Shame really -
because his songs were very good. This was his only film soundtrack.
Otley
- Pink Floyd
- Zabriskie Point
- Quicksilver Messenger Service
- San Francisco acid-rock band who were contemporaries of the Grateful
Dead and Jefferson Airplane. Legendary British keyboards player Nicky
Hopkins joined the group in the late 60's and became a key member.
Captain Milkshake
Revolution
- Les Reed
- English songwriter - who with revolving partners Barry Mason, Geoff
Stephens and Tony Macaulay churned out a succession of catchy pop hits
in the 60's. "It's Not Unusual," "Delilah," "There's A Kind Of Hush,"
"The Last Waltz" and "Love Grows." This was one of several soundtrack
scores he wrote.
Girl On A Motorcycle
- The Sandells
- Popular surf group of the era.
The Endless Summer
- John Sebastian
- The brilliant autoharp-playing leader of the Lovin' Spoonful was also
the group's principal writer. He composed the songs for their two movie
soundtracks. His solo hits include "Welcome Back" - the theme song of
"Welcome Back Kotter"
What's Up, Tiger Lily?
- Dusty Springfield
- The glorious original diva of British pop-soul singers. Gone now - but
gloriously unforgettable.
Casino Royale
- Rolling Stones
- Zabriskie Point
- Dionne Warwick
- What's New Pussycat?
- The Youngbloods
- West coast-based folk-rock band originally from New York. Biggest hit
was "Get Together" ("Everybody get together try to love one another
right now...") a somewhat naive philosophy given that it was released
just as Richard Nixon became President.
