In June 1965, American Beat poets Allen Ginsberg, Gregory Corso,
Lawrence Felinghetti and others gave a landmark poetry
reading/happening at Britain’s Royal Albert Hall in front of 7,000
ecstatic Londoners. The event is often cited as the beginning of the
Psychedelic counter-culture movement in England! This is the rarely
seen documentary of that epochal event.
PRAISE MARX AND PASS THE AMMUNITION
Another ultra-rarity from the U.K., PRAISE MARX follows the amorous
adventures of a young revolutionary (played by John Thaw- aka
“Inspector Morse”) who uses his radical politics to get women into bed
with him – until he’s kidnapped by fellow party members and put on
trial for betraying the Revolution!! Noted silent film composer (and
occasional Paul McCartney collaborator) Carl Davis appears as a
character in the film trying to write catchy pop songs about Trotsky!

Scripted by the Turtles’ lead singer Howard Kaylan (later of Mothers of
Invention and Flo & Eddie fame), the film depicts the true story of
Kaylan and his bandmates as they stumble into international fame
following the mega-success of “Happy Together.” On their first-ever
night in London, they encounter the cream of British rock royalty: the
Beatles, Brian Jones, Graham Nash, Donovan and a brace of Moody Blues.
Kaylan winds up sharing a revelatory late-night dinner with the
legendary Jimi Hendrix.

To bring the 5th Annual Mods & Rockers Film Festival to a swinging
finale – there will be a FREE concert of great 60’s music at The
Knitting Factory. Live music from top 60’s tribute band The Mockers!
And since the closing film of the festival (earlier in the evening) is
the Los Angeles premiere of the brand-new film written by Howard Kaylan
of The Turtles about the experiences of the Turtles in swingin’ London
in 1967 (including encounters with The Beatles, The Moody Blues,
Donovan and Jimi Hendrix) – The Mockers will perform a special tribute
to the Turtles. With Turtles lead singer Howard Kaylan in attendance
for the premiere of his film – anything might happen!!!
