![]() Shagger's Guide! FESTIVAL SCHEDULE
Festival Opening Night! Double Bill! MONTEREY POP 1968, Cowboy Pictures, 78 min. Dir. D.A. Pennebaker. Widely considered the high-water mark of the 1960’s West Coast music scene, the Monterey Pop Festival was the brainchild of the Mamas & Papas’ John Phillips and Michelle Phillips and producer Lou Adler, and featured stunning performances by Jefferson Airplane, the Who, Simon & Garfunkel, Otis Redding, Eric Burdon & the Animals, Country Joe & The Fish and Ravi Shankar. Standout moments: Jimi Hendrix’s epochal “Wild Thing,” and Janis Joplin’s take-no-prisoners “Ball & Chain.” The 1969 Woodstock Festival and subsequent movie were directly inspired by this pioneering event and its groundbreaking film – both now belatedly enjoying their rightful places in rock history. Discussion after film with Monterey Pop Festival co-organizer Michelle Phillips and Roger Daltrey - and other Monterey guests

Celebrate American Independence Day Get Super-Marionated on July 4th with Thunderbirds double-bill! THUNDERBIRDS ARE GO 1966, MGM/UA, 93 min. Dir. David Lane. This – the first of two stunning THUNDERBIRDS features shot in “SuperMarionation CinemaScope” – features our heroic puppets blasting off into space, where they collide with marionettes of Cliff Richard & The Shadows (portraying their own future children!) singing the hit theme song.

Nancy Sinatra Tribute In Person! MOVIN’ WITH NANCY 1967, Boots Ent., 60 min. Dir. Jack Haley Jr. This fabulous late 60’s TV special captures Nancy Sinatra at her Mod best, wearing a succession of jawdropping fashions (the yellow cowboy hat! the pink go-go boots!!) as she delivers rockin’ versions of “Sugar Town,” “Friday’s Child” and other hits. Highlights include her duets with Lee Hazlewood on the classic “Some Velvet Morning,” Sammy Davis Jr. on “What’d I Say” and her “fairy god uncle” Dean Martin on “Things” !
![]() New 35mm print!! THE WILD ANGELS 1966, MGM/UA, 93 min. Dir. Roger Corman. THE WILD ANGELS was the the anarchic pioneer that fostered a new exploitation genre: the biker film. Hot-tempered pack leader Heavenly Blues (Peter Fonda) has no respect for straight society and goes about proving it, spearheading a freewheeling odyssey of mayhem on the highways of the great Southwest. Nancy Sinatra, Bruce Dern, Diane Ladd and Michael J. Pollard join him on his journey of perpetual rebellion. With music by Davie Allan & The Arrows and Mike Curb. This is the first new print of THE WILD ANGELS in many, many years, so don’t miss it!! Discussion between films with actress/musician/producer Nancy Sinatra Mods & Rockers Club House at The Knitting Factory – open 6pm – 2am
Mod Rarities Double Feature! JOANNA 1968, 20th Century Fox, 108 min. A long-lost Mod gem from British director (and former teen heart-throb singer) Michael Sarne (MYRA BRECKINRIDGE), JOANNA stars the irresistible Genevieve Waite as a free-spirited art student in Carnaby Street London who floats from one mad love affair to another like a butterfly – until she meets dying aristocrat Donald Sutherland (in an amazing, underrated performance.) With a lovely, melancholy score by the great Rod McKuen. Since JOANNA is unavailable here in any form, we’ve brought this ultra-rare print in from the British Film Institute, just for this showing!! New 35mm print! THE MODEL SHOP 1969, Columbia, 95 min. Famed French New Wave director Jacques Demy (THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG) and his LOLA star, the stunning Anouk Aimée, re-teamed for this dreamlike and very psychedelic portrait of Los Angeles in the late 1960’s. Aimée reprises her role as “Lola,” with Gary Lockwood (2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY) as a young Angeleno who follows her tantalizing image across the city, until they finally meet at the enigmatic Model Shop. With a superb original score by Spirit. Only briefly seen on its original release, and impossible to find nowadays (it’s never been available on video), MODEL SHOP has been gloriously restored in a sparkling new 35 mm. print by Sony Pictures – don’t miss it!! Mods & Rockers Club House at The Knitting Factory – open 6pm – 2am
Mod Children’s Matinee! BATMAN 1966, 20th Century Fox/Criterion, 105 min. Dir. Leslie Martinson. The “Batman” TV show was the Pop Art epitome of self-aware 60’s camp. It was so successful it spawned this feature length opus, bringing to the big screen more tongue-in-cheek antics from Batman (Adam West) and Robin (Burt Ward) as they battle a villainous alliance of The Penguin (Burgess Meredith), The Joker (Cesar Romero), The Riddler (Frank Gorshin) and The Catwoman (Lee Meriwether). Soundtrack by Nelson Riddle. Join us for this live-action comic book extravaganza!! Discussion following with actress Lee Meriwether
A Salute to Maurice Gibb of The Bee Gees Join us for a special memorial salute to the late Maurice Gibb (1949 – 2003) of the Bee Gees, one of the most talented songwriters and performers of the past four decades, who sadly passed away in January. We'll be screening two of the Bee Gees' most rarely-seen film projects: CUCUMBER CASTLE 1968, 56 min. Never before screened in the U.S., "Cucumber Castle" was created by Maurice and Barry Gibb as a late 60’s British TV special… the Bee Gees' equivalent of "Magical Mystery Tour." The show evolved into a medieval/psychedelic musical lark written by and starring the brothers, with a truly hallucinogenic cast including Vincent Price, Spike Milligan, Lulu and Eleanor Bron - with cameos from Mick Jagger, Roger Daltrey, Donovan and Marianne Faithfull. It also features the only known TV performance by rock’s first-ever supergroup: Blind Faith. The show reflects Maurice Gibb’s role as the court jester of the Bee Gees. Directed by Hugh Gladwish (THE GHOST GOES GEAR) and produced by Robert Stigwood.
![]() MELODY (aka S.W.A.L.K.) 1970, 106 min. Dir. Warris Hussein. Maurice and Barry Gibb were commissioned by producer David Puttnam to provide the soundtrack for this long-lost gem -- scripted by Alan Parker -- that re-united young actors Mark Lester and Jack Wild (co-stars of OLIVER!) in a story about pre-teen pals at a British school. The plot takes a very novel twist when 10-year-old Lester falls in love with 10-year-old Melody (Tracy Hyde) - and the two youngsters decide not to wait until they're older to get married! Maurice Gibb became closely involved in the music for the film and remained very proud of his contribution to the score. (Please note that the only available print of MELODY is faded. Because of its extreme rarity, we're including it in the Festival.) Mods & Rockers Club House at The Knitting Factory – open 6pm – 2am
Double Feature of counter-culture classics! New 35mm print! JANIS 1974, Universal, 96 min. Arguably the greatest female rock singer of her generation, Texas-born Janis Joplin invested her records and concert performances with a ferocious, heartbreaking intensity, before her tragic death from a drug overdose in 1970. Director Howard Alk’s excellent portrait of Joplin (made with her family’s cooperation) features volcanic concert footage of her from 1966 – 1970, performing “Ball And Chain,” “Piece Of My Heart,” “Tell Mama” and other classics. YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT 1968, Cerberus/Natoma Prod., 75 min. Dir. Barry Feinstein. This insanely-rare 60’s artifact is a stream-of-acidness portrait of Haight Ashbury and the Summer of Love, featuring footage of Barry McGuire, Paul Butterfield, David Crosby, Tiny Tim, Peter Yarrow and local San Francisco icons Super Nun Sister, Immaculata Baby and legendary pot dealer Super Spade (who was murdered before the film was released). With music by Electric Flag, Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention and others. Please note that this, the only surviving 35 mm. print of the complete, uncut version of YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT, is faded. Because of its extreme rarity – and grooviness! – we’re including it in the Festival. Introduction to "You Are What You Eat" by cast member - singer Barry McGuire - who will also give a rare live solo acoustic performance of his classic hit "Eve Of Destruction"!!! Mods & Rockers Club House at The Knitting Factory – open 6pm – 2am
Double Feature of movies set in Swingin’ London! TO SIR, WITH LOVE 1966, Columbia, 105 min. Dir. James Clavell. Teacher Sidney Poitier gives heartfelt lessons in “survival training for life” to a class of rebellious working class London teens, including hot-tempered Christian Roberts, love-struck Judy Geeson, and dollybird supremes Suzy Kendall and Lulu (who sang the smash theme song to the film). Look for The Mindbenders casually performing their #1 hit “A Groovy Kind Of Love” at a local school hop for a handful of kids! Actors Judy Geeson and Michael Des Barres will participate in a discussion after the film.
![]() KALEIDOSCOPE 1966, Warner Bros., 103 min. Dir. Jack Smight. Master gambler Warren Beatty figures out a fool-proof way to mark cards at Europe’s major casinos, but his affair with swinging Susannah York inadvertently brings him to the attention of York’s dad, Scotland Yard inspector Clive Revill. Revill’s willing to look the other way, but only if Beatty helps him trap ruthless international drug dealer Eric Porter – a proposition that proves even more dangerous than Beatty’s gambling scam! A glittering, fast-moving Mod thriller with a sterling cast. Mods & Rockers Club House at The Knitting Factory – open 6pm – 2am
L.A. Premiere! A SKIN TOO FEW: THE DAYS OF NICK DRAKE 2002, Roxie Releasing, 48 min. Over the course of three introspective and hauntingly beautiful albums in the early 1970’s, British singer/songwriter Nick Drake built a small but loyal following; now, nearly three decades after his tragically early death, Drake is widely considered one of the most important and influential musicians of his era. Director Jeroen Berkvens’ documentary features interviews with legendary producer Joe Boyd (of Fairport Convention and 10,000 Maniacs), Drake’s sister Gabrielle, and a wealth of unseen photographs and correspondence from the brilliantly gifted musician. BE GLAD FOR THE SONG HAS NO ENDING 1969, 50 min. Dir. Peter Neal. Much-loved British prog-folk-rock ensemble The Incredible String Band counted the Beatles, the Stones, the Who and Led Zeppelin among their most ardent admirers. Between 1966 and 1974, their exhilaratingly-eclectic fusion of rock, folk, Eastern psychedelia and other styles influenced all of the above artists and more. The ultra-rare BE GLAD FOR THE SONG HAS NO ENDING (screened in our 2000 Mods & Rockers Series) blended a diverse range of styles, including dance, mime, vaudeville and hippie home movie, into a magical mystery tour-de-force. Mods & Rockers Club House at The Knitting Factory – open 6pm – 2am
Underground movie classic! DAVID HOLZMAN’S DIARY 1968, Direct Cinema, 74 min. “Bring yourself into focus, expose yourself,” proclaims the cinema-obsessed hero (L.M. Kit Carson) of DAVID HOLZMAN’S DIARY, as he attempts to record as much of his life as possible on film. Part documentary, part fiction, director Jim McBride’s landmark independent film captured the chaotic counter-culture spirit of the late 1960’s like few other movies; in 1991, it was entered into the National Film Registry at the Library of Congress. Discussion following with director Jim McBride Mods & Rockers Club House at The Knitting Factory – open 6pm – 2am
Leigh Taylor-Young Tribute In Person! I LOVE YOU, ALICE B. TOKLAS 1968, Warner Bros., 93 min. Dir. Hy Averback. Henpecked lawyer Harold Fine (Peter Sellers) is vaguely dissatisfied with his mediocre life but isn’t really sure why -- until he meets and falls in love with hippie Leigh Taylor-Young. It’s down the rabbit-hole from there as Sellers opts for the psychedelic bohemian lifestyle, defying shrill fiancee Joyce Van Patten and overbearing mom Jo Van Fleet. The sequence where Sellers’ family is slipped pot brownies is one of many priceless scenes in this 60’s comic gem. With music by the legendary Elmer Bernstein.
![]() THE BUTTERCUP CHAIN 1970, Columbia, 95 min. One of the breakout re-discoveries of last year’s Mods & Rockers Fest is back for an encore screening! A lovely, melancholy little gem about lost love and fleeting friendships from director Robert Ellis Miller (THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER), THE BUTTERCUP CHAIN stars 60’s icon Jane Asher (DEEP END) and Hywel Bennett (THE FAMILY WAY) as a pair of cousins in Swinging London who ensnare American free spirit Leigh Taylor-Young (at her Mod best) and Scandinavian hunk Sven-Bertil Taube into their rondelay of bed-hopping. Barely released in the U.S. in 1970, and unseen for over 30 years, THE BUTTERCUP CHAIN is a wistful, pastel-colored and patchouli-scented time capsule of an era when Love Was All Around … Discussion following with actress Leigh Taylor-Young and THE BUTTERCUP CHAIN director Robert Ellis Miller and producer Philip Waddilove Mods & Rockers Club House at The Knitting Factory – open 6pm – 2am

Roger Corman Tribute In Person!! THE TRIP 1967, MGM/UA, 85 min. Dir. Roger Corman. Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, Bruce Dern and Susan Strasberg star in this Jack Nicholson-scripted story of a burned-out TV commercial director who takes the ultimate acid trip. American International Pictures changed the ending without Corman’s approval to suggest a more anti-drug stance; still, the film captures the Sunset Strip at the height of lurid, frenzied glory. Music by The Electric Flag. GAS-S-S-S 1970, MGM/UA, 79 min. Exploitation studio American-International found GAS-S-S-S even more disturbing than director Roger Corman’s THE TRIP and THE WILD ANGELS, so they actually recut it, the straw that broke the camel’s back as far as Corman’s continuing partnership with them. Even in its edited form, it retains a charmingly strange, subversive sense of humor all the way through. After an experimental gas escapes, killing everyone over 25, six young hippies (amongst them Bud Cort, Cindy Williams, Ben Vereen, Talia Shire) go on the run in New Mexico trying to find a fabled commune. Music by Country Joe McDonald. Discussion following films with director Roger Corman Mods & Rockers Club House at The Knitting Factory – open 6pm – 2am
A Salute to James Coburn OUR MAN FLINT 1966, 20th Century Fox, 107 min. Dir. Daniel Mann. Lean, mean loving machine Derek Flint (James Coburn) takes on the evil boys at GALAXY in a struggle for world domination and a good recipe for bouillabaisse. Essential Swinging 60’s equipment here: a cigarette lighter with 83 different functions. With Lee J. Cobb, Gila Golan, and a terrific, super-spy score by composer Jerry Goldsmith. ![]() THE PRESIDENT’S ANALYST 1967, Paramount, 104 min. Dir. Theodore J. Flicker. Very hip, idealistic psychoanalyst James Coburn is selected as the man to listen to the President of the U.S.A.’s troubles -- but is soon so stressed that he quits, becoming the target of every security agency in the world. While on the run, his encounters run the gamut from a terrifyingly “normal” family (with a very amusing William Daniels as Dad), to Jill Banner’s hedonistic hippie commune. A smart, hilarious satire, even more timely today, that takes on government, gun control, loss of privacy and the telephone company! With Godfrey Cambridge, Severn Darden. Mods & Rockers Club House at The Knitting Factory – open 6pm – 2am

U.S. Premiere of Two Cult British Counter-Culture Movies! WHOLLY COMMUNION 1965, Contemporary Films, 33 min. In June, 1965, American Beat poets Allen Ginsberg, Gregory Corso, Lawrence Felinghetti and others gave a landmark poetry reading/happening at Britain’s Royal Albert Hall in front of 7,000 ecstatic Londoners; the event is often cited as the beginning of the Psychedelic counter-culture movement in England. Never before seen in the U.S., WHOLLY COMMUNION is director Peter (TONITE LET’S ALL MAKE LOVE IN LONDON) Whitehead’s portrait of this epochal happening. PRAISE MARX AND PASS THE AMMUNITION 1970, Contemporary Films, 90 min. Dir. Maurice Hatton. Another ultra-rarity from the U.K., PRAISE MARX follows the amorous adventures of a young revolutionary (played by John Thaw, best known for British cop TV series like “Inspector Morse” and “The Sweeney”), who uses his radical politics to get women into bed with him – until he’s kidnapped by fellow party members and put on trial for betraying the Revolution!! Never before screened in the U.S., this Godard-influenced oddity features music by noted silent film composer Carl Davis, who appears as a character in the film trying to write catchy pop songs about Trotsky! Mods & Rockers Club House at The Knitting Factory – open 6pm – 2am
Hippie-ness Is Some Warm Fun! ALICE’S RESTAURANT 1969, MGM/UA, 111 min. Arlo Guthrie’s 18 minute FM radio hit, inspired by run-ins with New England law enforcement and his local draft board, becomes a freewheeling, spontaneous odyssey under Arthur Penn’s direction. Charmingly off-the-cuff and episodic, the film follows Arlo’s adventures with his commune comrades, including Mari-Chan (Tina Chen), addict Shelley (Michael McClanathan), and slightly older bohemians, sensible Alice (Pat Quinn) and rabelasian Ray (James Broderick). Be sure to catch Arlo visiting dad Woody (Joseph Boley) in the hospital and, along with the real Pete Seeger, serenading him with the “Car, Car Song.” A wistful, funny depiction of the ups-and-downs of the hippie lifestyle. TAKING OFF 1971, Universal, 93 min. Director Milos Forman’s first American film is a warm and hilariously subversive comedy about parents trying to cope with their runaway children. The focus is on bewildered Buck Henry and Lynne Carlin as they try to deal with daughter Linnea Hancock’s flight to Greenwich Village hippie life -- and end up expanding their consciousness as much as she does! With Tony Harvey, Georgia Engel, and music by the Incredible String Band. Mods & Rockers Club House at The Knitting Factory – open 6pm – 2am
