BOTH SIDES NOW - JONI MITCHELL AT THE ISLE OF WIGHT

(2018, 77 mins, MLF/Eagle Rock, Directed by Murray Lerner)

One of the most acclaimed performances at the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival was by Joni Mitchell. The majority of the performers at the five-day festival were rock bands powered by thousands of watts of electricity and testosterone. Joni Mitchell went in front of a crowd of 600,000 armed with just an acoustic guitar and her subtle jazz-folk inflected songs. Her performance - only her second appearance ever in the UK - happened under less than perfect circumstances. As she arrived on stage - the festival was in some turmoil with a large contingent of anarchists demanding that the festival (5 days of music for approx. $8!) was a rip-off that should be totally free! It was then that Joni hit her stride. And she conquered the crowds with her music, wisdom and passion. Decades later, Joni gave filmmaker Murray Lerner an incredible intimate interview reminiscing on the entire experience which provides context in this remarkable film. This documentary - 48-years-in-the-making - was Murray Lerner's final film. And one that he was most proud of. It also chronicles one of Joni Mitchell's finest hours... WORLD PREMIERE!!!

THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MIRROR - BOB DYLAN AT NEWPORT

(2007, 83 mins, MLF/Sony, Directed by Murray Lerner)

This film documents the remarkably swift metamorphosis of Bob Dylan from scrawny Guthrie-inspired protest singer to Ray-Banned rock icon in just 24 months. Drawing from hours of previously-unseen footage he shot over several years at the Newport Folk Festival in the early-to-mid sixties, Lerner documents Dylan's development from his first Newport appearance in the summer of 1963, through his legendary 1964 performances to his historic and controversial 1965 appearance unveiling his new rock-star incarnation and electric band.

LEONARD COHEN AT THE ISLE OF WIGHT

(2010, 64 mins, MLF/Sony, Directed by Murray Lerner)

Legendary performance 48 years ago in which the then 35-year-old Cohen held a crowd of 600,000 spellbound for an hour-long show that started at 4:00am. The best film document of Cohen's early period - the film includes major hits such as "Suzanne", "So Long Marianne", "The Stranger Song", "Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye", "Diamonds In The Mine", "Famous Blue Raincoat" - with Cohen backed by his group The Army - led by Bob Johnston - esteemed record producer for Cohen, Dylan and Simon & Garfunkel
